Trailhead: From Hood River, go across the Columbia River and then head west on hwy. 14. Just after passing over the Wind River and before you reach Stevenson, head north on forest road 30. Stay on forest road 30 through Carson and over Old Man Pass. A couple of miles after cresting Old Man Pass, turn left on Curly Creek Road and follow this down to forest road 90. Go right on road 90 and then left on forest road 9039 after a few hundred yards. Park at the river and look for the trail heading upstream on the other side of the road. (1.5 hours)
Highlights: This is a classic trail through old growth forests along the Lewis River. Expect several short steep climbs, great views and a few technical challenges.
Note: Use caution near the cliffs at the viewpoints. 3 small bridges are in sad shape, but passable, in the 3 miles south of the road crossing below the camp ground (upper 3-miles of lower section) Do this ride as an out and back or loop with FS 90, but expect heavy road traffic and no shoulders along the road. Control your speed on the trail.
